Many factories were left vacant after cheap overseas labour lured business away in the Nineties, but there is little sign of a decaying town in dire economic straits. The Centre for Ar t and Architecture Affairs, a factory turned co-operative, is part of an explosion in the Guimaraes arts scene. Local architect and the gallery-cum-theatre’s director Ricardo Areias was quick to spot the opportunities opening up on his return from studying and working in New York. ‘It was the right time to come back: Guimaraes is an exciting place to be right now,’ the 34-year-old explains to me over canapes and his family’s own vinho verde. Areias explica esto en otra vieja fábrica de Guimarães, reconvertida -gracias al impulso de un grupo de jóvenes arquitectos de la ciudad- en el Centro para Asuntos de Arte y Arquitectura. Aún huele a nuevo, hay muchos espacios vacíos, la biblioteca presenta los libros arrumbados y envueltos en plásticos y hace un frío que pela. Pero cada habitación tiene adjudicada una misión, desde residencias para artistas extranjeros invitados a un laboratorio audiovisual especializado en robots animados y juguetitos móviles que haría las delicias de cualquier chiflado de la informática aplicada o de cualquier chiflado a secas. The Center for Art and Architecture Affairs, unveiled in October 2011 in a former textile factory, is the latest opening in Guimarães. The non-profit collective promotes interaction between various fields of creative expression, including visual arts, design, film, literature, media, performing arts and architecture. Upcoming events on the European Capital of Culture program include a conference focused on the work of John Cage (10 March to 28 April) and Frame Art, a video art and experimental cinema festival (3 May to 8 July). Not far from Guimaraes’ beautiful city squares and historic facades is a crumbling industrial district. The gates and doors of abandoned factories are covered in thick foliage and secured with weighty locks. It’s a desolate scene in a long-deserted quarter. Then the eye is drawn to a large, brand new black structure: The Center for Art and Architecture Affairs (CAAA). Once a textile factory, it has been transformed into an artists’ haven. “Guimaraes is my hometown,” said Ricardo Areias, whose idea it was to convert the old factory. The young architect lived and worked in New York for a short time, but he and his wife were searching for a project back home in Portugal. The European Cultural Capital designation gave them that opportunity. Read full article

I learn that the town’s first non-commercial gallery (the Centre for Art and Architecture Affairs) happens to be opening this evening. Encouraged, I walk through now-crowded streets to find it. When I arrive, the sense of metamorphosis is complete. In the gallery’s main hall people with beards and Breton tops drink white wine, while upstairs are installations that include Camus books in cling film and a small pile of rubble. I feel bemused, mildly irritated and immensely cheered: culture does not get much more 2012 than this. Read full article

Guimarães tem um novo espaço cultural. O Centro para os Assuntos de Arte e Arquitectura (CAAA) foi inaugurado no sábado. Para além da programação própria irá receber duas estruturas importantes no âmbito da Capital Europeia da Cultura (CEC): o Laboratório de Criação Digital e a Plataforma de Produção Audiovisual.
