A couple of weeks from her residence at CAAA, Elisabeth asked us for a sewing machine to work with. When she arrived, was fascinated by the Brother DB2-B714-3 we had for her and by all the sewing material she was able to find at the haberdasheries in Guimarães.
Elisabeth Gschiel shows in this exhibition the work produced during her Artistic Residence at CAAA, where she has been since April.

The artist works mainly with used plastic materials, such as packaging material or transparent plastic foils. For the exhibition at CAAA she has collected all the used plastic water bottles and generated a map of the world. The water on the map is made of pressed, sewn plastic bottles. Further projects are old portrait photos of unkown people, they were given away, found at a flea market in Porto. On the photos were sewed wings on a plastic foils applied. Plastic bags with contents were processed and Azulejos were made of sewing pins.

Who is Elisabeth?

Elisabeth Gschiel – lives and works in Graz, Austria.

Educated in graphic design and architecture. She holds a Master degree in architecture from the Technical University of Graz. Worked at Szyszkowitz-Kowalski Architects and at LOVE architecture and urbanism.

Since 2011 she is working on sewn plastic landscapes and plastic installations. She is a member of a group of artists “Schaumbad- Freies Atelierhaus Graz”. She has participated on several exhibitions in Austria and abroad.

She was the winner of the Artist in Residence Scholarship April-May 2013 supported by the Cultural Department of Styria, Austria.

This series of artistic work emerges as a reflection on the mobilization of the body in performative and ritualistic practices that articulate in some way with fashion and/or religiosity, two territories at same time contrasting and contiguous in contemporary culture.

It is assumed, in this body of masterpieces, that the body is a symbolic operator of a great importance and occupies a crucial place in the artistic and cultural figurations, starring the plural reunion arts with the obsessions of contemporary as too with most ancient ritualism.

The manifestation of the performance art and its developments in documentation as videographic and photographic media, as well as new languages ​​caused (video-performance, photo-performance, etc.), embody a space that corresponds to the elucidation of the ephemeral and the enduring while.

Both artists have come together as a collective (duo) in 2006 and founded the Cia Excesses in 2008.

The main feature in their conception is the multidisciplinarity. This duo has been building a hybrid form of theatrical research, concerning the dialogue among video, theater, performance art and photography.

The company also has invited artists to join the team in some works.

The underlying motto of the “Improvisations/Collaborations” series underpins this endeavour. Two filmmakers combine their directing skills, undertaking to discover and accompany moments of experimentation and construction of this series, without recourse to pre-formatted recording devices.

CONTRA-CAMPOS is neither exhaustive, nor lies outside the adventure of the artists who have been filmed. It doesn’t only aim to profile modes of fraternity and freedom, that derive from an open attitude towards co-creation. It also fosters reflection, through seeking dialoguing points of view – via counterpoints – in relation to a relatively under-analysed “genre” within the history of the moving image: the recording of the process of artistic research and its presentation in the form of spectacular objects.

The filmmakers try to assume the improbable and utopian place of (highly) participative spectators. They thus trace an experience which also transformed them. However, unlike purely performance-based works, a film is an edited object and as such, attempts to embrace and encompass a questioning attitude, the internal questioning of oneself via oneself…

Adolf Loos: Our Contemporary celebrates the centenary of the Looshaus in Vienna and the publication of Adolf Loos most provocative theoretical text: “Ornament and Crime”. Its primary aim is to map some significant reactions to Loos both among his closest followers, and more distant admirers, from architecture to cinema. Adolf Loos lived and worked at the time that cinema was in its first stage of making its cultural impact. He wrote film reviews about the stage set and its design.

From the moment of its appearance Loos’ cultural criticism never failed to elicit controversy and outrage. Couched in the language of his day, it reads as a polemic from another era that nonetheless continues to hold its own. One of chief objectives of the exhibition is to capture the uncanny sense of contemporaneity that Loos exerts, often in the most unobtrusive ways.

The exhibition will travel to the MAK Vienna in March 2013 and will be exhibited later on at the GSAPP Gallery at Columbia University in the City of New York together with a symposium at the MoMA.

um lugar a meias consists of a series of drawings made on sheets of newspaper, where the creation of narratives seeks to address issues inherent to the graphic diary as an archive.

It is also presented a wedding dress in which we can read the embroidered words ‘blind date’, supplemented by an exhibition of photographs of the dress before this intervention.

We seek for um lugar a meias that lies in the space between what is the matter of intervention and the intervention itself, and only ends in the eyes and memories of the observer.

In the first part, short experimental films in Super 8mm are shown. In the second part, it’s screened the short-film Barba, that tells the story of three pre-historic characters that inhabit around a dolmen.

Technically, “Reconversão” combines the crudeness of proto-cinema with the hyperrealism of digital cinema, bringing us back to the ideals of Dziga Vertov. Shooting only one or two frames per second and animating the images, in the manner of Muybridge, produces greater resolution, although not necessarily a greater sense of reality, and brings attention to the movements of water and vegetation that generally pass unnoticed.

The exhibition EXP # 01 in CAAA presents a selection of the final works of the students of the Postgraduate Course in Photography at the Escola das Artes, Universidade Católica do Porto. The works in this exhibition are not merely the culmination of an academic stage but an initial step for what we hope to become a prolific photographic and artistic career. All the authors have very different techniques and themes, and they are all unique in their approach to the classical genres of the History of Photography, such as portraiture, landscape or street photography. Some works are more personal and intimate, others may seem more distant and neutral, but they all show different paths and possible interpretations that each author decided to undergo in his photographic work.

Jorge Santos is one of those artists who deal with the immaterial. One of those artists concerned with, more than with things themselves, the relationships between people and things, natural phenomena and the processes of perception. He has that exploratory drive shared by poets and scientists alike. Under the influence of this inquisitive toil, he builds up spaces that are small visual poems, for us to enjoy their formal beauty for what it is; and yet, while enjoying it, we discover, wide open just deep in the palate, this intense presence of flavour where a multitude of shades is revealed. A multiplicity of chains of thoughts that collide to the retina; because we “see” them, we re-live them, as if the electric impulse set by our optic system to our nervous system could be sent back by our brain, in some sort of inversion of the perception process.

Assuming a descriptive mood, these photographs endorse landscape as a cultural construction. They look into urbanism and architecture as ideological epitomes, seen through the organization of public spaces.

As visual fragments of a non-existent whole, they intent to create an imaginary new town by assembling photographs from five different towns, chosen according to the different historical and political phases of the New Towns programme, Stevenage (1946), Harlow (1947), Cumbernauld (1955) Runcorn (1964) and Milton Keynes (1967).

Performing a dual subjective mode, as documents and as artistic representations, the photographs look at and trace distinctive elements of the landscape design and architecture, aiming to create an allegory of the UK New Towns.

In the scope of his most recent work “Danza Preparata”, Rui Horta stated: Cage is essential to the history of dance, not only because of his lengthy collaboration with Merce Cunningham, but above all because of the importance of his theoretical reflections and their repercussions for the history of contemporary choreography. This is the motto for an informal talk with the portuguese choreographer and the english pianist Rolf Hind about the importance of John Cage in the domains of dance and music.

“Danza Preparata”, a creation by Rui Horta, will be presented on thr 14th of April in CCVF, on the scope of Guimarães 2012, European Capital of Culture, and has the participation of dancer Silvia Bertoncelli and pianist Rolh Hind, that will play live “Sonates & Interludes” by John Cage.

The exhibition Cage… advances a set of hypotheses from the perspective of a new generation – formed in the 21st century more than the 20th – regarding the radical experimental project of the American composer John Cage (1912-1992).
Built from a series of “modules,” the show hand-picks a crucial set of Cage’s most influential indeterminate scores, and traces their impact on the first post-Cagean composing strategies of the 1960s. It will then turns to the question of how this field of radical experimentation is still being seized and translated in the present.

Events in the opening day, March 10, include a lecture by the co-curator, Julia Robinson and a performance by Margaret Leng Tan.

Julia Robinson is Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History at New York University. She was the curator of John Cage & Experimental Art: The Anarchy of Silence a retrospective exhibition on Cage tracing his impact on late 20th century art, which opened in Barcelona at MACBA in late 2009 and toured other European cities through 2010. In 2010 she curated New Realisms: 1957-1962: Object Strategies between Readymade and Spectacle at the MNCA Reina Sofia, Madrid. Recently she edited a new volume of writings on John Cage for October magazine’s October Files series published by MIT Press in 2011.

Margaret Leng Tan is a major force in the American avant-garde and one of the most preeminent John Cage interpreters. Hailed as “the queen of the toy piano” by The New York Times, Tan has elevated a humble toy to the status of a real instrument. Her diminutive music-theater of nostalgia and humor has delighted audiences worldwide. In “The Art of the Toy Piano”, she performs works by John Cage and Cage’s “spiritual children”, those inspired by his adventurous spirit to write for the toy piano and other toy instruments.

The Belgian performer Tom Hannes (1970) graduated as a Master in Literature on the poetics of John Cage and has performed numerous of Cage’s texts in performances, notably Empty Words, Chauncecleer, A Medieval Circus on the Canterbury Tales and Lecture on Nothing. He is a Zen priest and writer.

Alison Knowles is a visual artist known for her sound works, installations, performances, publications and her association with Fluxus, the experimental group of which she was a founding member in 1962. She was a close friend of John Cage, and edited his book Notations, published by the Something Else Press in 1969. Her work has recently be shown at the Tate Modern, London and at the Museum of Modern Art, New York where she lives and works

Christian Xatrec lives and works in New York. His artistic practice can best be described as theoretical research unconstrained by the idea of production as commodity. In this exhibition, The Low Ride Pleasure, Pedro Magalhães enters the world of car tuning in Portugal, an activity considered illegal in this country.
The car tuning culture is connected to matters of identity and can be read as an aesthetic extension of the individual and his personality through a series of changes ranging from the interior to the exterior of the car, printing on this object the idiosyncrasies of its owner. All the chosen extras allow a different behavior and appearance, turning something that is mass-produced in something unique, through a do it yourself process like some sort of vernacular engineering.
Car tuning concentrations we see in this series are places where boundaries are challenged and where eccentricity prevails. They normally take place away from large urban centers, where a subculture displays aesthetic and tastes that go beyond the prevalent standards of choice and preference, revealing the result of the lapidation of an object in an endless quest for overcoming the banal and the charismatic statement.

This is not a retrospective. Not even a survey. One can interpret this exhibition as if the photographer acted as the curator of his own work , using the idea of landscape as the main theme for the selection of works.
This exhibition contains photographs from 2005, starting with the series entitled Interior, exhibited in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon) and never shown outside this institution; the series Imaginary film sets, comissioned in 2007 for the exhibition at Solar, Cinematic Art Gallery in Vila do Conde; the series Still There, (Lebanon, 2011) from the BES Photo 2011 award till the most recent images produced in Japan.
The exhibition A collection of landscapes is an opportunity to better understand the guiding themes and idiosyncrasies of the author’s work and his documental approach to reality through the use of photography.
